Lahaina resident Peyton Chesson sifts through the rubble of what used to be his bedroom as he visits his home for the first time since the wildfire, accompanied by a team from Samaritan’s Purse, Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, in Lahaina, Maui. Peyton Chesson and Zoe Chesson were renting a house on Kainau Road when the Lahaina fire broke out. They fled with their two children and eventually decided to move to Kona where Peyton had better job prospects. Peyton is back for closure and to see the two-bed, one-bath ohana unit they rented for the last eight years; Relocating has been hard for the family. University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization data shows Maui's population declines by close to 2K from 2022 to 2024 and remains about 2K below its 2nd quarter forecast for the rest of this decade. A smaller loss is expected statewide as about 25% of those departing Maui are expected to move to other islands.
