Lahaina family home displacement
POY - The revelation of how complex the recovery is in Maui became crystal clear when Lahaina resident Paul Maloney allowed myself and colleague Allison Schaefers to follow them to their home to pick up some belongings. With no power, water, or infrastructure, and having been through their seventh hotel room as displaced residents, their mood mirrored in the countenance of this frame—dark, uncertain, yet there are rays of sunshine. I think about them every day.

Lahaina resident Paul Maloney, right, and granddaughter Kamryn Bosque gather belongings from their home on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, in Lahaina, Maui. The Maloneys and their family have moved seven times since evacuating their Kahoma Village home the day of the wildfires, and while their home still stands, water, electricity and infrastructure still prevent them from being able to inhabit their residence—even while rent is still being paid all the while.
